Picture this...

It's 2020 and I am looking for the perfect film camera that's affordable (at the time) and easy for me to navigate since it would be my first time using a film camera beyond the classic disposables we all had as kids.

Enter in the Canon AF35M I found on Facebook Marketplace for $80 and it's been my ride or die ever since. If you're reading this, you've probably seen me prancing around TikTok with this camera convincing people to also take their next step into film photography. So let's learn a little more about the camera that stole my heart over three years ago.

A (very) Brief History

Now everything I know about this monstrosity of a camera I learned from the internet and so I must give credit where credit is due. I am also not going to bore you with five paragraphs on the history of this thing. So let's get down to it.

In 1979, Canon introduced the AF35M, a revolutionary autofocus compact camera. Featuring a fully automatic system, this camera simplifies the photography experience. The 38mm f/2.8 lens ensured sharp and clear images. It gained popularity among young photographers seeking user-friendly functionality. The AF35M's impact extended beyond its time, influencing the development of subsequent compact cameras and contributing to the broader accessibility of photography.

So why is everyone horny for this camera?

Beats me. She's big, loud, a lil heavy, and doesn't fit easily in small places. But I love her anyway (like a loving partner should.)

In all reality photographers appreciate the Canon AF35M for its pioneering autofocus technology, providing a seamless and user-friendly shooting experience. Its 38mm f/2.8 lens further enhances its appeal by delivering sharp and clear images, making it a go-to choice for those who value simplicity without compromising on image quality.

Some things to note...

So I've convinced you with my quick wit and amazing sample images to search for this camera to begin (or add to) your collection. Please take note of the following things I have learned and am willing to share with you as your honorary film big sister. One, please make sure you HALF PRESS TO FOCUS. It does depend on the model of camera you have, if you purchase the Canon AF35ML that's another ball game that I can't speak to. But for the version I have, make sure that when you go to snap a fire image, you half-press on the shutter to focus and then full-press to shoot.

Second, you need to make sure to stand a "camera stap" length away from your subject in order to make sure it's in focus. The auto-focus feature may fail on you if your subject is too close. I have found making sure that your subject is an arm's length away or more, your image will more than likely come out in focus. If you can remember these two things (and an insane amount of luck) you too can look like me *KACHOW.*
